El Hogar, The Home of Love and Hope, Honduras
Financial support and sponsorships for children to provide a home, food, education, medical cared and job training
El Hogar, Home of Love and Hope, Honduras
In 2012, Good Shepherd sponsored two students. Nelson Mauricio Lazo Perez, a student at El Hogar’s St. Mary’s Technical Institute, whom Good Shepherd sponsored for two years, graduated in November 2012. Nelson is 17 years old and studied carpentry along with his academics. With the graduation of Nelson, Good Shepherd will now be sponsoring a new student, Willy Sabid Escoto Diaz. Willy attends El Hogar’s Agricultural School and Farm, where we also sponsor 14 year old Emanuel Padilla Ferrera. Both boys are learning agricultural best practices along with their academics so that they will be able to return to their home communities and contribute to improved farming productivity.
El Hogar, the Home of Love and Hope, is an orphanage home and school, centered in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, that provides a home and Christian education, including career skills training, to about 250 children aged six to eighteen. The children who come to El Hogar are the poorest of the poor; many have never known a toothbrush, a TV, or indoor toilet. El Hogar is financially supported by U.S. and Canadian churches and individuals; it is sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese in Honduras, part of the American Episcopal Church and endorsed by ERD. One of Good Shepherd’s $1,500 sponsorships is funded by parishioner donations to COGS noted for El Hogar scholarship; the second one is funded by the Outreach Committee fundraising efforts. Individual church parishioners also sponsor nine other El Hogar girls and boys, ages seven to fifteen. Sponsors receive photos and letters about their child, and are encouraged to send cards, letters and photos of their own. In 2013, Outreach will continue to seek renewal sponsorships and new sponsorships from parishioners. During 2012, the scholarship fund also received donations from the church library book sales and the “absent guest” Thanksgiving parish dinner. El Hogar's website is www.elhogar.org.
El Hogar Ministries - Guest Speaker
We were fortunate to have Liz Kinchen, Executive Director of El Hogar in North America, join us as guest preacher at the Festival of Lights and Peace services January 7th and 8th, 2012. Ms. Kinchen was the third different El Hogar speaker to visit Good Shepherd in the past few years. She spoke to us about seeing God at work at El Hogar and provided an update on the new home and education plans for the girls graduating from El Hogar’s 6th grade elementary school.
