Text in Community was started in 1990 to provide an opportunity for parishioners who like to read to come together in Christian fellowship, and to encourage spiritual growth through the reading of literature. We meet the 2nd Tuesday of the mon th for a potluck dinner followed by a discussion of a book recommended by participants.
The next meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 8. Meet in the Parlor at 6:30 p.m. for potluck, with the book discussion starting at 7:30. All are welcome to attend.
The October book is In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner. The New York Times Book Review says the book is "full of beauty, even joy. . . What is remarkable, and honorable here, is the absence of anger, and the capacity--seemingly infinite--for empathy."
Author Vaddey Ratner was five years old when the Khmer Rouge came to power in 1975. Having endured four years under the brutal regime, she arrived in the United States in 1981 as a refugee not knowing English, and eventually went on to graduate summa cum laude from Cornell University where she specialized in Southeast Asian history and literature. She lives in Potomac, Md.
The selection for November is The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson.
