Biography - Sam Martin |
|
My family and I have been members of The Church of the Good Shepherd and it's wonderful people since 1980. During that time, the church has become an integral part of our lives. In 1983 Bishop David Jones celebrated the blessing of my marriage to my wife, Liz. Our daughter, Mary Katherine, was baptized, and confirmed here. The choirs and other youth programs provided for her that God-centered connection with other young people that remain a foundation for life. The Episcopal Church has been a part of my life since the mid-1960's when, as a student at the College of William and Mary, I became a member of Bruton Parish and the Canterbury Club. After college, I joined the United States Air Force and retired after 26 years. Throughout my military career and world duties, the Episcopal Church was there for me. Following my retirement from the Air Force, I taught for 15 years in Fairfax County Public Schools and retired again last summer. Teaching helped me to better understand today's youth and restored my faith in the future of this great Nation. I'm currently a Lay Eucharistic Minister, Lay Intercessor Minister, Lector and am involved with the Media Ministry, FACETS, and the ESOL programs. Now that I'm fully retired, I want to devote more of my time and talents to God and this church. Good Shepherd must continue to provide a place for all people to seek comfort, and aid. We must persist in our efforts to give our youth a strong foundation for Christian living. As a vestry member, I will support and attempt to enhance the mission of Good Shepherd as a Christ-centered community committed to discipleship.
